Cathedral rock, on the left, is the third officially
recognized vortex,. Considered magnetic, female or yin. Go to Red
Rock Crossing and view Cathedral rock. This is probably the most
photographed site of not only Sedona, but Arizona as well . . . .
not counting the Grand Canyon. If you view it from this point of
view it will appear as if a man and woman are standing back to
back. On the right another shot of Boynton Canyon. This is one of
Sedona's more popular hiking
areas. |

Rachel Surber will take starring role in a documentary
series

So you want to be in pictures?
If you’re a teenager with a big heart and a philanthropic
mission and if you can tolerate a television camera in your comfort
zone, Sedona filmmaker Sarah Russell wants to give you a
scholarship.
As the executive director of Reel Opportunity, Russell has already
recruited Red Rock High School senior Rachel Surber to take the
starring role in a documentary series featuring teens who make a
difference around the world.
“ Rachel Surber is an incredible teen with a vision of what
she wants to do and how she wants to contribute to those in
need,” said Russell.
Along with other local teens, Surber’s work on
“Project Esperanza” will provide the content for Reel
Opportunity’s first documentary.
The initial idea for helping a Mexican orphanage probably
wasn’t a concept that would have translated well into prime
time.
“” My first idea was just to raise canned foods and
clothing, but now it’s gotten really big,” said Surber.
“That soon changed.”
Esperanza paras los Ninos, a small Christian orphanage about 15
miles from Puerto Penasco, is home to dozens of abandoned and poor
children. When Surber visited the 14-acre site, she said it was
clear the orphanage needed new classrooms, dormitories and a
nonsectarian chapel, not just volunteers, food and clothing.
Soon after, Surber returned to Mexico with her mother, Bobbie
Surber, and her father, architect Dan Surber, and a construction
specialist to go over site plans and cost estimates for the
project.
“ Without Sarah’s help, it was going to be really hard
to do it myself,” said Rachel Surber of her efforts to raise
the $70,000 in construction costs.
“ After 10 minutes with this girl, I knew she would be
perfect,” said Russell. “She really knows what she
wants, and I can’t wait to see her grow as a person at the
end of all this.”
The same could be said of Russell, who is at the beginning of her
career as a filmmaker.
After graduating early from high school in Palouse, Wash., Russell
took her acting dreams to New York City, where she discovered life
behind the camera. After a stint in the advertising world of
Broadway musicals, Russell took leave of Manhattan and relocated to
Seattle, where she took part in some independent film projects and
found herself back in front of the camera.
“ I have done several commercials, including Adidas with
Anna Kornikova, and many obscure independent films that you can
rent at independent stores in Seattle,” said Russell.
“I also starred in a television show called “The Night
Shift” in Seattle that is rolling into its fourth year on the
air and doing very well.”
After showcasing her acting skills on the twice monthly, comedy
show on Seattle’s all-access cable channel, Russell came to
Sedona to reignite her passion for film as the assistant to the
director of the Sedona International Film Festival.
This year Russell has enrolled in the documentary film program at
the Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking at Yavapai
College.
“ I am very excited about the new documentary program at
Zaki and want to just continue learning about all aspects of film,
not just producing,” said Russell.
